What keeps people from making a pilgrimage is rarely cost, distance, or time. More often, it's uncertainty. By separating fact from fiction, you may discover that pilgrimage is more attainable—and more meaningful—than you ever imagined.

One of the most common misconceptions is that pilgrimage is reserved for saints, theologians, or those with perfect faith. The reality is quite different. Pilgrims come from all walks of life and every stage of faith. Some arrive with deep spiritual convictions, while others come seeking answers, healing, or a renewed relationship with God. Pilgrimage is not about having all the answers—it is about being open to the journey.
Many people assume pilgrimages require extreme physical endurance. While some pilgrimage routes involve significant walking, most modern Catholic pilgrimages are designed to be accessible to a wide range of travelers. Comfortable accommodations, transportation, and thoughtfully paced itineraries allow many pilgrims to participate regardless of age. Some of the most inspiring pilgrims are often the most experienced travelers.
A pilgrimage may include beautiful destinations, historic churches, and memorable experiences, but its purpose is very different from a vacation. Vacations focus on relaxation and entertainment. Pilgrimages focus on prayer, reflection, spiritual growth, and encounter. While pilgrims certainly enjoy the journey, the destination is ultimately deeper than sightseeing.
Many first-time pilgrims worry about traveling with strangers. Ironically, one of the greatest blessings of pilgrimage is the friendships formed along the way. Shared experiences, prayer, meals, and conversations often create bonds that last long after the journey ends. Many pilgrims arrive alone and leave with lifelong friends.
You do not need a theology degree to appreciate pilgrimage. Part of the joy of pilgrimage is learning along the way. Sacred sites, local guides, Masses, and shared experiences naturally deepen understanding and bring history to life. Curiosity is far more important than expertise.
While many retirees enjoy pilgrimage, today's pilgrims represent a wide variety of ages and backgrounds.
Couples, families, working professionals, parish groups, and solo travelers all participate in modern pilgrimages. The desire to grow closer to God is not limited by age.
Perhaps the most common myth of all is the belief that there will always be a better time. Many pilgrims discover there is never a perfect moment. Life remains busy. Responsibilities continue. Schedules stay full. Sometimes the invitation to pilgrimage is simply an invitation to step away from daily distractions and make room for God.

Pilgrimage is not reserved for the experts, the perfect, or the fearless. It is for ordinary people seeking something more. Whether you are looking for renewal, deeper faith, meaningful fellowship, or simply a chance to walk where countless believers have walked before, pilgrimage offers an opportunity to encounter God in a unique and memorable way. The hardest step is often the first one.
