Understanding Mary's Role in the Catholic Faith
Few aspects of Catholicism are more misunderstood than the Church's devotion to Mary.
Many non-Catholics assume Catholics worship Mary or place her above Jesus. In reality, Catholic teaching has always centered on Christ.

Myth #1: Catholics Worship Mary

Catholics worship God alone—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Worship belongs to God and God alone. Mary's role is entirely different. Catholics honor Mary because she is the mother of Jesus and a model of faith, but she is never worshipped as divine.

When the angel Gabriel announced that she would become the mother of Christ, Mary responded with faith and trust:
"Let it be done to me according to your word."

Myth #2: Mary Distracts From Jesus
Some people worry that devotion to Mary takes attention away from Christ.

Why Catholics Ask for Mary's Intercession
Another common question is why Catholics pray to Mary.
Catholics do not pray to Mary as they pray to God. Rather, they ask for her prayers in the same way Christians often ask friends, family members, or fellow church members to pray for them.
Because Catholics believe the saints remain alive in Christ, they ask for the intercession of those who have gone before them in faith—including Mary.
