Luke 1:46
Many non-Catholics assume Catholics worship Mary or place her above Jesus. In reality, Catholic teaching has always centered on Christ.
Mary's importance comes from her unique role in God's plan and her example of faithful discipleship. Understanding her place in the Catholic faith can help clear away common misconceptions and reveal why generations of Christians have honored her throughout history.

This is perhaps the most common misunderstanding about Catholicism.
Catholics worship God alone—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Worship belongs to God and God alone. Mary's role is entirely different. Catholics honor Mary because she is the mother of Jesus and a model of faith, but she is never worshipped as divine.
Just as Christians may honor great saints, Catholics hold Mary in special esteem because of the unique role she played in salvation history.

Mary's importance begins with Jesus.
When the angel Gabriel announced that she would become the mother of Christ, Mary responded with faith and trust:
"Let it be done to me according to your word."
Her willingness to say yes to God's plan changed human history. Catholics admire Mary because she points us toward Christ. Her life demonstrates humility, obedience, courage, and complete trust in God.

Some people worry that devotion to Mary takes attention away from Christ.
Catholics see the opposite as true. Every authentic Marian devotion ultimately leads believers closer to Jesus. Mary's role is not to replace Christ but to point toward Him. At the Wedding Feast at Cana, her recorded words in Scripture beautifully summarize her mission:
"Do whatever He tells you."
Throughout history, Mary has directed believers toward a deeper relationship with her Son.

Another common question is why Catholics pray to Mary.
Catholics do not pray to Mary as they pray to God. Rather, they ask for her prayers in the same way Christians often ask friends, family members, or fellow church members to pray for them.
Because Catholics believe the saints remain alive in Christ, they ask for the intercession of those who have gone before them in faith—including Mary.

Mary appears throughout key moments of the Gospel story.
The Annunciation
The Visitation
The Nativity
The Wedding at Cana
The Crucifixion
Pentecost
From beginning to end, Mary remains close to Jesus and present among His followers. Her example continues to inspire Christians today.

Many of the world's most beloved pilgrimage sites are connected to Mary.
Places such as: Fatima, Lourdes, Guadalupe, and Knock draw millions of pilgrims each year seeking prayer, healing, and spiritual renewal.
These pilgrimages are not ultimately about Mary herself, but about encountering Christ through prayer and reflection.

Catholic devotion to Mary is rooted in love, gratitude, and respect for the woman who faithfully accepted God's call.
Catholics do not worship Mary, nor do they place her above Jesus. Rather, they see her as a spiritual mother, an example of discipleship, and a guide who continually points believers toward her Son.
Understanding Mary's role helps reveal one of the most beautiful dimensions of Catholic spirituality: a faith centered on Christ and enriched by the example of those who followed Him most faithfully.
